Portfolio for Keith Breeden RP - Commissionaportrait
Before turning to painting in 1995, Keith Breeden worked in London designing record sleeves. During this time Breeden designed artwork for album and single covers with bands including Pink Floyd, Duran Duran and Culture Club, and also worked on book, magazine, and poster campaigns for the music press. Much acclaimed, his work received several Music Industry awards in the Europe and the UK.
Through a fascination with people, he began to paint form life. Firstly a self-portrait, then a double portrait of two brothers, Jack & Morley Richards (see painting of the same name). This was accepted into the BP Awards in 1996 and received the Public Choice Award. The excellent reception this portrait received led to a commission to paint the Governor of HM Tower of London. |

| Artist's Statement |
|
“Through looking at the work of Holbein, Vermeer, Hals, Valasquez, Gauguin, Cézanne and Sutherland (whilst all the time looking at myself) I have come to see painting as a process of ordering the world I see and translating it into a new vocabulary that I have created. Essentially, I am establishing my own structure.
I think the essence of painting remains the same regardless of motive. The skills required by a painter portraying people are specific to that task in as much as the process is interactive. Establishing a relationship with the sitter can be the most vital, and the most enjoyable part of painting a portrait.” |
