| Artist's Statement |
|
Though I began painting portraits of people, modern paintings of dogs, which I slipped into an exhibition, attracted a lot of attention. From then on I was doing dog portraits and realised there was quite a big market amongst people with slightly more modern taste for these modern and mildly humorous renderings of dogs. Dogs have a lot of character and visually they are very humorous, so I try to bring this out in my portraits on white block canvases with the dog looking up and out of the canvas as they do in life. I also aim to really capture the character of each dog, and people usually say of the commission that I have exactly caught their dog’s individual expression. However I am still available to paint people. I don't want to die as the great dog portraitist!
When painting dogs I try to bring out the particular nature and physical appearance of that dog, the dog may lend itself to a cheeky humorous rendering or a more aloof and noble type of painting. I try to create a calm perhaps Dutch stillness with quite a modern pose or style of painting. |

Sarah Arnold initially meets the owner to asses the character and nature of the sitter and discusses what the client would like brought out in their character and the preferred style. She then makes a few sketches of the sitter and anything to be included in the composition. This takes around an hour. Then the artist takes reference photographs if painting dogs to work from as they are obviously not the best stitters! This should be sufficient for her to work from and should not take more than 3 hours. If Sarah feels that she does not have enough information or does not know the sitter she may need a second visit. If the client is not based in London then the artist can and has worked on site if that is preferable.
Sarah is happy to offer advice on framing or have the painting framed for the client for an additional fee plus the price of the frame. |
