Portfolio for Neil Cawthorne - Commissionaportrait
Horses have always played a large part in my life and I have ridden and drawn them for as long as I can remember. At the time I started to paint seriously I was hunting with the Quorn and Fernie and this constituted much of my early work.
I was greatly assisted in those early days by John Kenney who also lived and worked in Leicestershire. Over the following five years I had several exhibitions and painted an increasing number of racing subjects.
In 1971 was commissioned by the Sporting Life to paint 'Mill Reef' and 'Brigadier Gerard'. In 1975 and 1976 I exhibited in America and London. During the past 15 years I have been fortunate to paint many Classic, Grand National and other big race winners. In 1979 I helped to found the Society of Equestrian Artists.
I was commissioned annually by Seagram during their sponsorship of the Grand National and for Martell's inaugural sponsorship.
I exhibit with the American Academy of Equine Art and at the Society of Equestrian Artists' annual exhibition at Christies, where I have had numerous awards including the President's medal.
Over the years many of my paintings have been produced as Limited Edition Prints, including commemorative paintings at the retirement of the Huntsmen for the Ouorn, Fernie and Cottesmore Hunts. |

Artist's Statement |

"Whilst much of my work is taken up with commissions, I still find the inspiration of the Racecourse, Training Grounds and Hunting Field as strong as ever and I am still concerned with conveying their movement, atmosphere and excitement." |
