Amanda has no formal art training. She had every intention of studying fine art, but got side-tracked by the theatre while doing an arts foundation course in Nelson, Lancashire. She went on to study theatre design in Cardiff and on upon graduating in 1989, began a fruitful career as a prop maker and scenic artist. Theatre, Film and TV work occupied her entire 20's. During this time Amanda took on portrait commissions in pastel. In 1997 she tried oil painting for the first time and since then prop making has taken a back seat.

Artist's Statement   My passion is portraiture from the 15th and 16th century. I am mesmerized by the enigmatic expressions of the proud sitters and it is my desire to recreate this mystery in my own paintings. Portraits should be more than just an accurate likeness of the sitter. Why do a painting of a person in their favourite armchair or posing in their Pringle sweater? A camera would suffice for this type of portrait - I want to portray people in a more ethereal light, taking the portrait back to its traditional function, celebrating the person and their persona. My favourite commissions are the ones that allow me to combine my prop making skills with my love of art history. Ultimately, I want to produce portraits that are evocative, decorative and a joy to paint.

Statement      I work on wood panel approx. A3 size, 30x42cm (depending on the amount figures you require). Or I can work to specific dimensions you have in mind as long as it is not large scale. As I work on wood, this restricts the size I can work on.  
At the start of the commission I like to establish what it was that attracted the client to my work so we can begin to discuss the requirements of the portrait e.g. historical costume, enigmatic expression, composition or maybe the ancestral tone of my paintings.  
I do not paint from sittings. I prefer, instead, to have an initial photo session with the subject at a mutually agreed place. At the session, I can position the sitter by a good light source with a neutral background or against the actual background to be used in the painting. I take enough shots to use as reference material for the painting process later on. This method does not inconvenience the sitter or the artist and the results can be viewed and discussed immediately after the photo session, via laptop computer.  
When a photo session is not possible or when secrecy is necessary (i.e. if the portrait is a surprise gift), I can produce portraits from photographs provided by the client. In these circumstances, I need background information of the subject so I can grasp the essence of their personality. Large, professional quality photographs, preferably taken to my specifications, are required. Small, out of focus snapshots are not usable. If the subject wears glasses I would need photographs with and without. Photographs of the subject smiling or grinning are unsuitable for this style of portraiture. It may be necessary to turn down a commission if no suitable image can be obtained.  
Once the requirements of the client have been finalized and suitable photos have been taken, I produce a preliminary sketch for the client's approval. At this stage any amendments can be done and an updated sketch sent. Upon approval I start to paint. I need at least two months notice from the initial contact to the deadline, or more depending on complexity of the composition.  
I then send the portrait unframed. This allows for the client to chose a frame which best suits the environment which the portrait will be displayed. Also being on wood they work well leaning against a wall or piece furniture.
