Portfolio for Keith Holmes - Commissionaportrait
I want the portrait to be a narrative and as much about the sitter, their life and achievements as is possible in one image. To this end, much in the same way of the Northern Renaissance artists, I like to include their environment, home, work or leisure, favoured objects or people. I have no problems working from photographs but I do prefer meeting and having a discussion with the person involved. I like to keep the nature of the medium as neutral as possible, it is a portrait of the sitter and not about my abilities in flashy use of media. |

Statement |
|
Initially I make a large charcoal drawing of the sitter during which we can talk about their history, listen to their favourite music and generally relax into the situation. This is the time I tend to learn the most about the essential personality of the sitter. We discuss what they would like to see in the painting and how I would like to represent them. It is at this time that I would take a number of photographs of the sitter and their environs. The drawings and photographs remain my property and are not part of the commissioned painting. Variable, two to four sittings of three to four hours. Fewer sittings would be required for the main painting, one to three sessions of about two hours each, and a final sitting of the same duration. Where possible I like to borrow favoured items to make studies of them, if not then I photograph them. It is best that the initial drawings are done in my studio, charcoal is too dirty for anywhere else. This would be followed by a visit to the sitters favoured backdrop. Oils are always on top quality marine ply board, to prevent splitting traditionally prepared with layers of gesso.
I can arrange framing and it would be better that I deal with the framing of the charcoal drawings and pastel paintings because of the difficulties that they present. My framer is good and reliable and I am a trained art conservator so everything would be done to the highest standard. |
