Painter, Editorial cartoonist, caricaturist and sculptor. Richard Cole was born on 19th August 1942, the son of Archibald George Cole, an ecclesiastical wood carver. He began illustrating covers for Record Review ( later Hi-Fi News) in 1957 when still at school and later studied painting at Wimbledon School of Art (1960-63) and Brighton College of Art (1964). In 1968, Cole had a painting selected for the Open Painting Exhibition in the Northern Ireland Arts Council Gallery, Belfast. His first political caricatures appeared in the Kingston Borough News in 1970. Full-time freelance work followed with profiles and political cartoons for The Times (1973-87), daily TV caricatures for the Daily Express (1978-80), caricatures and illustrations for the book and city pages of the Daily Telegraph (1988-2001) and editorial and political cartoons, caricatures and general illustrations for the Sunday Times (1973-95). Since 1995 he has also drawn regularly for the Sunday Telegraph and the Guardian . Other work has included illustrations for BBC TV’s Tonight and Panorama programmes and Channel 4 News. In addition he has been CBS New’s European Contract Artist since 1983, covering Parliamentary debates, criminal trials etc. Throughout his years working for the National Press , Cole has continued to pursue his painting career, and has a working studio in London and France.

Artist's Statement   As a satirist I am able to give an edge to my portraits. I aim to achieve with my caricature a portrait that has a creative energy that captures the sitter’s characteristics and personality and extends beyond a purely photographic representation.

Statement      I always insist on a short meeting with the client where I can make a preliminary sketch, and take some reference photographs. I am then able to study the sitter’s facial expressions and characteristics, and complete the portrait in the studio.
Portrait commissions can be supplied suitably framed.
