Portfolio for Justine Osborne - Commissionaportrait

The artist has been working as a pet portrait painter for clients both in the UK and Worldwide since graduating from Central Saint Martins in London in 1998. She now lives and works in Gloucestershire. Her painting style consists of bold poses, simple backgrounds and painterly marks, making her a popular, modern, contemporary pet portrait artist. Couple this with an inherent feel and passion for her canine subjects, she paints dog portraits with an intensity that draws the viewer in.

Artist's Statement   Dogs - these noble subjects become vessels of our love and affection in our quest for happiness. My dog portrait paintings represent this special relationship between pet and owner. Considering canine individual quirks and petty routines allows for a fresh approach to the tradition of dog portraits. As a portrait artist you are always trying to achieve the essence of the subject, to portray the spirit of the sitter. Often the difference with painting dogs is that the sitter (the dog) is unaware of being under the scrutiny of the artist. This allows for creative freedom, and a candid nature to modern dog portraiture.

A painterly style under pins my work. I enjoy the colours of dogs, their shape, their intensity of expression. By using texture, contemporary colours and composition, my dog portraits reflects their variety and vitality in each painting. Dog subjects often become larger than life with large scale works. Despite the obvious impact, large portraits allows for detail, expression and fun. There are no canvas constraints so you do need to be confident and bold - every mark, every hair becomes monumental, and oil paint is such a tactile medium, perfect for painting dogs.

By specialising in dog portrait commissions I have the opportunity to capture the character and idiosyncrasies of each dog, celebrating this bond between owner and pet. As a painter, I find each commission gives a unique insight into the nature of dogs, and the great effect they can have on our lives.

Statement      Ideally the artist would like to meet the dogs, and take photographs to work from for the portrait. It is an opportunity to get to know the dog or dogs and get a feel for its environment. If this is not possible the artist welcomes photos of your dog to work from. The portrait artist is happy to discuss any ideas the client has for the dog portrait.

Justine produces gallery style paintings where there is no need for framing, this works particularly well with her relaxed, informal style of dog paintings. Thinner canvases suitable for framing are also available, and the artist will discuss with you what will be most suitable for your pet portrait.. Depending on size dog paintings can take from 3 weeks.
