Portfolio for Trinidad Ball - Commissionaportrait
Born in Barcelona, of Catalan parents, I have lived in Spain, Latin America and the United Kingdom, where I now reside. I have had a number of jobs, including Probation Officer, until I discovered painting in 1997. Painting quickly took over my life, and in 2003 I gave up formal employment to paint full-time. I have since had several successful exhibitions and a number of commissions. I rergularly exhibit at the Churzee Gallery, Wimbledon Village, London and Llewellyn Alexander, The Cut, Waterloo, London. I have also exhibited at the Menier Gallery, Southwark London, the Northcote Gallery, Battesea London, and the Form and Colour Gallery, Warsaw Poland. I have started teaching painting which I find greatly enhances my undertanding of this art. I am currently working on a collection of tango dancers which are due to be shown at the Argentinian Embassy during a charity event organised by APARU. |

TRINIDAD BALL
Born in Barcelona, of Catalan parents, I have lived in Spain and Latin America before moving to England where I have lived for many years. I have trained at Central St Martin's, Putney School of Art and South Thames College.
About Trinidad Ball
I started painting in 1997 and in 2003 I resigned my post as Probation Officer to dedicate myself full-time to art. The interaction of colour is the basis for my work. I am excited by bright, strong colour and the drama created by darkness and light. Inspired by the Spanish and Dutch Masters, and moved by the colours of Van Gogh, my paintings have been described as "displaying fine technique, and an assured heightened sense of colour and form".
For me each painting is a challenge and an adventure. Close observation of life and nature, the details and the subtle variations in colour, light and shadow, is what compels me to paint. Through the use of many thin layers of high pigment oil paint, my aim is to render a translucent and luminous painting which gives the viewer the illusion of high realism. |

Artist's Statement |
|
Painting portraits is a joy and a challenge. In my opinion, it is the most difficult but rewarding form of painting. I believe a portrait should capture the essence of a person’s uniqueness. It is also an opportunity to go beyond mere representation and to bring drama and impact to the image of the sitter. In addition, it should reflect its importance as a historical and contemporary record. As a contemporary realist, I feel my style lends itself particularly well to portrait painting. In my portraits I combine modern settings and colours and pay particular attention to form, light and composition. Through the application of many layers of transparent paint I achieve a portrait which is deep, rich and luminous and which enhances the immediacy of the sitter. |
|
Statement |
|
Whilst I prefer to draw from life, I find that when using oils a more spontaneous and interesting portrait is achieved by using a combination of sketches and photographs. I like to have an initial interview with the sitter to get to know them and to take several photographs. During this session I also form an opinion regarding composition, style, lighting, colours and background. The final portrait can then be discussed with the sitter. I am normally able to complete the portrait from this material but if necessary, a final sitting would be arranged, depending on the sitter’s time commitments. I can also paint entirely from good quality photographs. The completion time would depend on the complexity of the painting but it would normally be between one and two months. Whilst I do not undertake framing, I can arrange for this to be done or I can make suggestions regarding style. |
