Portfolio for Gavin Langford - Commissionaportrait

Gavin Langford was born in Wimbledon in 1969. After a fairly ordinary life as a boy in a public school he went to Art School in Liverpool. Here he got a degree in Fine Art in 1992, producing large abstract paintings. Since then Gavin has trained himself in portraiture (and also trained as an actor). Artist's Statement   What I love about portraiture is the priviledge of getting to know people really well. It is a sort of collaboration and unique in art as it relies in the connection between two people. I also love learning and inventing new techniques and approaches in the service of getting a picture to be really lifelike.
Part of the pleasure of being a portrait painter is studying great paintings of the past and coming into contact with great ideas, great minds and the part of art which is timeless and beautiful.
My intention is to get someting that looks like it lives and IS the person who wants their portrait painted. For me portraiture is not just about copying by also of recreating the existence of something on the canvas.

Statement      I begin by spending a day or a couple of sittings drawing and painting and just getting to know my sitter in their own home. I then take a lot of photographs and work from these in my studio. I return to my sitter a couple of times to refresh my memory. The process takes about two months.
Alternatively, if the client wants to, has the time and would like a more vital picture, I will work entirely from life in the sitter’s home taking about seven two to three hour sittings.
