Portfolio for Jane Hyde - Commissionaportrait

A venerable tradition: Like generations of painters for more than two centuries, Jane Hyde has spent several years working in the trenches of Paris museums creating (paradoxically) “original”, fully creative copies of the masters. “Nowhere is the process and discovery of seeing what makes great art great more evident than when you are standing in front of a master’s work in the Louvre in the City of Light with the smell of turpentine permeating the ancient stone of the Grande Galerie…. Realising that there are hundreds of versions of “white”, for example, presents a particular challenge, and to reproduce them requires practice and keen observation. But once conquered, this approach can add great energy and reward to your work while immersed in the incredible beauty surrounding you…. This is my (short) definition of a copyist.” Born in Seattle, Washington, Jane’s interest in art was spurred by a move to Paris in the early ‘80s. Over the past ten years, Jane has studied painting and drawing at various workshops in France and Italy, working with well known artists such as Igor Bitman, Franck Janca, Behzad Behnam, Jorge Hermle and Helena Hamer, to name a few. She has also attended such schools as the Ecole du Louvre, Ateliers de Beaux-Arts de Paris, Atelier de Saint-Paul, Académie de la Grande Chaumière, as well as two years at the Atelier de Restauration de Brigitte Malavoy (learning painting restoration). “But the learning never stops: I continue to study as long as I continue to paint. The masters are our best teachers.
Birth date   1944
Group Exhibitions   Her work can be found in private collections in Europe and the US. She has also participated in several group exhibitions for copyists in Paris and Normandy. Three original pieces commissioned for 2011 show, Galerie Images de Fer, rue de Seine, Paris, on the history of St-Germain-des-Près and the Café Palette.
Artist's Statement   “My approach is wholly academic as I enjoy the visceral alchemy of mixing the pigments according to the period/school of each painter. My heroes include Poussin, Balthus and Andrew Wyeth, as well as master colourists Bonnard and Vuillard.”

Statement      A medium size copy (15 x 20in) would probably take two to three months for completion, depending on the amount of detail. All painting is in oil, and I can work from good photographs or other professional documentation. I can also advise on the support to be used, whether canvas, wood panel or fine linen mounted (marouflé) on panel. For best results, I usually prepare the ground myself, using the old techniques, depending on the era of the painting to be copied. I am also happy to advise on framing.
