Portfolio for Vincent Yorke - Commissionaportrait
Vin Yorke was born in Cambridge but has lived for most of his life in Gloucestershire where in addition to his primary occupation of painting he grows cider apples and quinces commercially. Now best known for his portraits (which he started doing 15 years ago), he also creates still life paintings, often of fruit and vegetables, ‘for light relief’ and because he finds the different shapes and textures both challenging and immensely satisfying. |

Artist's Statement |
|
When we look at a portrait we meet another human being. The best portraits make us want to know that person better, to discover their passions, to sense their sorrow, to share their jokes. That is the encounter that I paint. A silent encounter yet one in which every feature, every gesture and mannerism speaks loudly.
A portrait is like a translation. My role as the artist is to observe, to analyse, to understand as much as possible of my subject, always in his or her own context initially, and then to share that unique sensation, the complex dialogue between sitter and painter, through the language of paint. |
|
Statement |
|
I need between 5 and 10 sittings, depending on the complexity of the work, in the subject’s own environment, home or workplace. I use my own photographs as an aide memoire, but cannot work from photographs alone.
Larger groupings (calculated on a per capita basis) and complex background or surroundings (eg inclusion of a house or room with specific contents) will increase the cost of the painting. Each portrait will be individually priced according to requirements. |
