Portfolio for Simon Watson - Commissionaportrait

Simon Watson lives and works in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He paints commissions of a wide variety of subjects for many types of clients. He went to Art College at Brighton polytechnic and later worked in sculpture casting studio in East London where he learnt the techniques of bronze casting. Simon first focused on sculpture and explored the relationship between man and machine culminating in the ‘machine age series’, which have been exhibited and sold worldwide. During this period he also worked as a commercial model maker. He continues to produce work in a variety of media and styles. Simon is also a musician and is in the process of recording his first album with his band ‘The Gents.’ Since his success as a finalist in the Daily Mail ‘Not the Turner Prize’ Simon has increasingly focused on portraiture as a vehicle for expression.

Artist's Statement   My paintings portray a candid approach to portraiture aiming to capture the true personality of the sitter.

Statement      I start by visiting the client and share ideas about the portrait, possible solutions, how the sitter sees them self and would like to be perceived. At this stage some quick sketches, colour studies and photographs will be made. I work mainly from photographs up until the final stages when another sitting will be required for final details.
Timescales for sitting will vary from sitter to sitter depending on individual requirements, but usually no more then 3 sittings will be required each lasting no more than two hours.
