Portfolio for Nicholas Merton - Commissionaportrait

I live with the writer Chrissy Merton and our two adopted daughters from China in Camberwell, South London. I studied Architecture at Cambridge University and after designing buildings in Nepal, the Caribbean and the UK, I created a new life as an artist under the name of Nicholas Merton. My work has been selected by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters for their Annual Exhibition every year since 2003. This year the Royal Academy exhibited one of my self-portraits in their Summer Exhibition and it sold on the opening day. I am also a keen pianist and am currently working on a C.D. recording of Water Music to celebrate my 50th birthday in 2008.

Artist's Statement   I have been painting since I was very young, and I love people, so painting portraits is a complete joy for me to the point of being obsessive. I want to produce a quality of time-honoured painterliness that is lacking in many photographic likenesses nowadays. Capturing the character, presence and energy of the sitter is for me best achieved by close scrutiny of the first hand visual world. I feel particularly close to the 16th Century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (as I acknowledge in my signature), for his use of light, colour and those wonderful black and white tiled interiors. As for contemporary painters, for his ability to capture a real presence in his sitters, Lucien Freud is hard to beat.

Statement      I enjoy painting from real life as much as possible; portraits could take place in your own home, my teaching studio in Kensington, my home in Camberwell, or anywhere suitable. Sittings are designed to suit you and range in number from around five to ten sessions. The portrait shown here of Barnaby (four years old) was painted almost completely from photographs (with a few sittings in front of a video screen). Although the quality of the painting invariably suffers, this is a possibility, especially for younger children.
