Portfolio for David Sandell - Commissionaportrait

After serving 10 years in the Royal Marines from age 16, I then trained as a technical illustrator and graphic designer and am joint founder and creative director of an award winning design agency established in 1988. A pivotal point in oil painting for me was an artists' workshop in New York with American master Daniel E Greene. I am also a regular member of drawing/painting groups in Northampton and Mall Galleries, London. My work now appears in international corporate and private collections and has featured in international artist publications.

Artist's Statement   Although fundamentally an artist/illustrator, some of my commercial life has involved photography so I appreciate it for what it is but I also understand some of its limitations. As painting is a protracted process it enables the painter to capture the essence of the subject over time rather than just a snapshot. I would recommend painting from life wherever possible, however, I am realistic and flexible enough to try and meet most clients’ requirements by using some photo and sketch support studies. I have my own favourite artists each for different reasons, which include; Caravaggio, Delaroche, Ingres, Norman Rockwell, Lucien Freud amongst others.

Statement      Having a portrait done should be an enjoyable experience. The first stage is to meet and discuss your requirements, clothing, props and background options etc.
The second stage, which may be part of the first meeting, is a sketch and photo study session. This enables me to explore the compositional possibilities and will help establish the best pose using different lighting set ups.
Once a composition is decided, I will then begin the actual portrait. Soon after this I may be able to estimate the date of completion. During the painting process, which may take weeks or months, some additional sittings from life would be very helpful.
When near completion, a final sitting allows for minor adjustments before completing the portrait. At that time we can discuss drying time, varnish, framing and any other considerations.
Please note that the above procedures are only a guide; each step will be considered with your specific needs in mind.

"Standard Chartered Bank collect paintings of people from the many markets in which they operate, David was commissioned to paint two works for the collection which are fabulous and he was joy to work with, they are currently hanging in the Bank's office in Singapore."
Tom Tempest-Radford Art consultant to Standard Chartered Bank.

“We asked David to paint a picture of our daughter Grace, aged 21yrs old, in 2011 and we are absolutely delighted with the result. Grace found the experience of sitting for David pleasurable and unthreatening and was just as pleased with the finished painting as we are. It hangs prominently in our hallway and everyone remarks on how true to life, and capturing her personality this is. David is a talented and delightful artist to work with and I would be happy to recommend him to anyone.”
