Portfolio for Marcel Mayer - Commissionaportrait

Mayer stems from a line of painters of Spanish-Portuguese origin, the DIAS from BORDEAUX ( France) who even claim a family link with DIAZ de LA PEGNA born in that same town. His grand-father was a painter who worked also as decorator, his great uncle Nelson DIAS ( French School XIX cent. ) was a scholar of Gustave MOREAU, his mother was a gifted painter and a dazzling musician and singer who had won first prizes in the BORDEAUX Conservatoire, his sister was a promising painter who’s career was tragically interrupted. Thus MAYER learnt first from this family environment. But he discovered at thirteen his deep attraction to sculpture through Egyptian Art. Although he completed his studies in the Vaucanson engineer college he had the opportunity to acquire strong technical basis of direct carving in it’s sculplture department which confirmed his vocation . As a young sculptor he benefited of a studio in the city of Nice in the Villa Paradisio which had been organized for artist and used during World War II in replacement of Villa Medici in Rome. He soon completed several public commissions, mostly memorials to French Resistance. The greek-Italian patron, Socrate Stavropoulos praised his work and purchased ten of MAYER’s drawings and studies which are part of his collection in TRIESTE Museum ( Italy). He had a wonderful relationship with Countess Marie de SAINT EXUPERY, mother of the famous pilote and writer author of « The Little Prince » who encouraged and supported him with a motherly affection and untrusted him to the realization of a bust of Antoine de SAINT EXUPERY for which she lent him numerous photographies from her private collection. His first private exhibition was held in Paris with an introduction written by Albert CAMUS, Nobel Prize winner, and inaugurated by the Prefect of Paris himself. This created immediate response from the public and several commissions such as those of Baroness Alix de ROTHSCHILD who purchased several pieces for her personal collection and commissioned a monumental granite reclining figure and a stone « Marianne » symbol of France, for the town hall of the city near her estate in Normandie. He was also comissioned by famous german actress Romy SCHNEIDER for a bust in marble for which she posed in between her acting in a film . MAYER departed for the United States with a mission from the French Union of Sculptors and Plastic Artists in Paris ( non political professional organisation of French sculptors) and introductions by personalities such as Paul LEON of the Institut de France, Cecile Goldscheider, Curator of the Rodin Museum, etc He lived several years in the USA where he taught, made lectures, exhibited, taking part in group exhibitions of the National Sculpure Society in New York, in Dallas (Texas) with works of MOORE and BRAQUE. He also had several one-man shows in Dallas, in the Museum of New Mexico Santa Fe, in Denver (Colorado) and other states. His head quarters were in TAOS , New Mexico where he was a member of the art colony , but he led Summer and Spring schools of drawing and sculpture in DALLAS. After his survey of the USA, and MEXICO, MAYER was back in Europe where as a confirmed sculptor he completed many private and public commissions . He also has spent some years in teacher training in the French State Education System. In 1971 he was invited in India to create an Art department in an International educational Center. MAYER is a very versatile artist who expresses himself through a range of very different medias from the very light watercolour to the austere hard granite carving including woodcuts, monotypes, oil paintings, modeling or carving a large variety of stones and wood. He is fellow of French Union of Sculptors and Plastic Artists ( Paris), of Fondation TAYLOR ( Paris) of Who’s Who International Art Club (Switzerland) Myriam MAY

Artist's Statement   Further to the physicalal likeness I mostly strive to catch the pscychologal personnality of the subject. Portrait bust is thus for me a speechless dialogue between artist and model. The search for the former of the interior reality which caracteizes the uniqueness of he later through the three dimensions of form , time and space to express it in matter.
The beauty which comes out of it to achieve a piece of art is due to the subtilness and penetration of this hazardous steps made of technicity and love in it’s higher significance.
