Portfolio for Fergus Mayhew - Commissionaportrait

Fergus Mayhew produces work of a quiet sensitivity and a timelessness that bound with strong composition and refined technique are at once rare and special in these modern times. His portraits betray a penetrating gaze and ability to see within the sitter leaving one with an image of strength and power that makes for beautiful images that one can live with.

Artist's Statement   There is a delicate balance between the painter and sitter, never more so that when attempting a commision. It is important to have a sense of empathy with the client and and to keep an open dialogue in place. The client has to live with the completed painting and for this to be succesfull it is essential that both sitter and painter reach a mutual understanding.
I want the client to take away a very special object that they can live with and that will give them pleasure for ever.

Statement      Ideally I would have an initial meeting with the client, followed by 2 sittings of 2-3 hours. I would hope to complete the notes and drawings I need within this time, discuss the composition and direction of the painting, and take a number of reference photographs. When everything has been agreed and the client is happy, I would then finish the portrait in my studio. No further sittings should be required.
The time for completion should be between 2-4 weeks depending on the scale. If required I would be happy to arrange for the portrait to be framed or I can leave that to the client.
