Artist's Statement |
"To paint people is to create a definite presence on a canvas. For me, the stronger the presence, the more successful the portrait. This can cover many sides of a likeness of a person, but each subject is a new discovery. A portrait is a distillation over a space of time: the artist reacting to the sitter, like a short film captured on a canvas, one which enables that person to live through paint in years to come." |
Statement |
“I prefer to paint from life when doing commissions but I will nearly always take photographs for further thoughts on composition and to help paint backgrounds and clothes if sitting time is limited. I ideally like sittings of between 2-3 hours with breaks and somewhere between 2-5 sittings per person, daylight hours preferred. I often suggest painting people in their homes as then a part of their environment can be included or suggested in the painting. However, some sitters have preferred to sit in my studio to avoid household distractions like the telephone or social visits. Although the commission does not come framed I am happy to offer advice on the matter." |
