Portfolio for Nigel Waymouth - Commissionaportrait

Nigel Waymouth was born in India in 1941. His early childhood was spent in Argentina until he moved to England in 1953. He graduated in economic history at University College, London. Following this, he attended art courses at various London art colleges. In 1967 he teamed up with fellow artist, Michael English, and began designing the quintessential British pop posters of that era. Most of the originals of these graphic designs are in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Since 1970, Waymouth has pursued a successful career as a painter, particularly as a much sought after portraitist. His work has been exhibited in many art galleries, both in England and the United States. He has also been included in numerous group shows. His works have been commissioned and collected by many well known and distinguished public and private collectors around the world, such as, Mr. & Mrs. Rupert Murdoch, The Duchess of York, The Duke of Devonshire, Mr. & Mrs. Tom Hanks, Mr. Dominick Dunne, Dame Diana Rigg, Mr. Peter Morton, Mr. & Mrs. Eric Idle, Dr. & Mrs. Mortimer Sackler.

Artist's Statement   My portraits are fairly simple and uncluttered in appearance, focusing more on the character, and likeness of the person. Rather than insincere flattery, I aim to show the human dignity each subject is entitled to have revealed in a portrait. If those who have the closest relationship to the sitter truly feel that I have done good justice to the sitter, then I am happily rewarded. If the sitter also feels the same way that would be an extra bonus. Naturally, all portraits are subject to the artistís skills, talent and point of view, or, to use John Singer Sarjentís droll definition. A portrait is a likeness of someone, with something wrong about the mouth. Whatever the result, I give my very best, knowing that the portrait is a work of art, a timeless record, to be enjoyed and understood by all who see it.

Statement      Oil paint is my preferred medium for painting, and charcoal or pencil for a drawing. Sometimes I use mixed mediums to add colour to a drawing.

Work begins with the first visit to the client. At this meeting decisions are made about ideas for the portrait. Sittings usually take place at the clientís house. I prepare by taking my own photographs. This process is far less intrusive than numerous long sittings, and is especially easier for children and people with busy schedules. Towards the end of the painting I ask for a couple of short sittings to finish and finesse the work.
