Artist's Statement   In each portrait I aim to both capture the look and personality of the sitter, and create a dramatic and pleasing composition. In order to achieve this I look for a place in the sitter’s home which may reflect something of their personality – a favourite chair for example – and one which will also provide an interesting balance of tones and colours in the space surrounding the sitter. I work directly from life, as this allows the sitter to relax into a natural pose, and results in a very direct portrait with fresh and painterly brushwork.

Statement      Before starting the portrait I will visit the sitter in their home to discuss potential settings for the portrait. I prefer to paint purely from sittings, and these usually take between four to eight hours, depending on the size of the portrait. The sittings can be spread over two or more days and arranged to suit the schedule of the sitter. Breaks can be taken at any time during a sitting.
