Portfolio for Stephen Teeuw - Commissionaportrait

I donít see portraiture any different to any other work I do. I hope to paint a picture to look at rather than a replica of a person in paint.

Birth date   30/09/1981

Introduction   I have been painting since I left Art College as a trained printer. Painting was a practical solution to my lack of living space. I taught myself to paint working from books, studying paintings and looking over peoples shoulders to see what was on their palette. I think this is what gives me an individual painting style because I have created my own solutions to representing subjects.

Statement      I can usually paint a face in 2 hours, after which I will make refinements from photos if it is needed. I will make a note of the surroundings and clothing but to save time I work from a photograph unless the surroundings are integral to the portrait. I would require one sitting per face.
I will work from photographs but only if I take the picture. I am a trained photographer and I know exactly the information I am looking for as a painter and how to find it in taking a photo.
I will travel to paint at the sitters home or a preferred environment. I also have a portrait studio in Norwich with a range of lighting, furniture and backgrounds.

Once again I doled out the rather grandly named A&K Wilson Gallery Award. It is in fact simply a chance for me to wander around an exhibition and chose "the painting the judge would most like to take home".
As an abstract concept it means that I don't have to deal in the realities of size or price tag, just concentrate on wether or not I like the work. This year the prize went to Stephen Teeuw for his piece 'The Mandolin'. A beautifully worked painting, and quite haunting. The palette, composition and handling, in my humble opinion are all outstanding.
Stephen got the prize last year too, so he's clearly a bit of a favourite!
