Artist's Statement |
“[Depiction of] life is a magic act: it is all done with mirrors”
"A portrait evolves by coming to understand, often in a short space of time, a complex and unique personality. The artist views the sitter through the mirrored confines of his or her personal life experience; the sitter presents to the artist another mirror – an image of how best he or she would like to be seen and remembered. The soul of the painting is captured between these two perceptions; without this soul, “achieving likeness” or “employing technique”, however masterful, is insufficient." |
Statement |
“Portraits normally require sittings of two hours each, spaced two weeks apart so that oil layers dry properly. When possible I prefer to come to the sitter. I begin with a rough pastel that pulls together impressions of colour and composition and will also take photographs at the initial sitting. Final canvases are completed in six to eight months. With portraits of children I try never to do anything remotely “arty” in their presence and just use the initial sitting to get to know them (in their own environment and on their schedules). I take a lot of photographs and spend time with the parents to better understand what facets of their child they would like to see. I leave framing to the sitter but can recommend a good framer.” |
