Portfolio for Lucy Willis - Commissionaportrait
Lucy Willis studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford where she received a rigorous academic training which included drawing from life and the antique as well as studies of anatomy. After leaving the Ruskin she set up her own workshop in Greece teaching etching and drawing to students attending the Aegean School of Fine Art. The artist then returned to England and began to devote more of her energies to watercolour. She won the 1992 BP Portrait Award for an oil painting inspired by her time as artist in residence at Shepton Mallet Prison. Much of her work is inspired by her travels to India, Africa and Greece. |

Artist's Statement |
|
I believe that the first priority in portraiture is to capture a likeness of the sitter. Only once this is achieved can I enjoy the challenge of making an exciting picture. |
|
Statement |
|
I work quickly and expect to complete a half-length portrait in approximately four sittings of three hours, allowing extra time if necessary. (For busy people and those who prefer short sittings I will require less time) I spend the first hour or two discussing and arranging the pose and then work directly onto the canvas or paper. I try to create a relaxed atmosphere, allowing for conversation so that the resulting portrait is reasonably animated. Although the commission does not come framed, I am happy to offer advise on the matter. |

Press Quotes |
It is perhaps her form, her manner rather than her content that holds the attention and stays in the memory. The luminous colour is laid down with such assured rapidity and freshness of touch that you empathise with the process.
Edward Phelps, Arts Review, July 1991.
