U.S. billionaire Randy Lerner, who owns the Aston Villa Football Club, said his family foundation pledged 5 million pounds ($9.8 million) to London's National Portrait Gallery, the museum said in an e-mailed statement.
The gift will be made over three years, and comes from the Lerner Foundation. The gallery now has renamed its ground-floor display rooms the Lerner Galleries.
``We are enthusiastic supporters of the gallery's director and the board for their inspired and creative management of the gallery's collection and acquisition program,'' Lerner was quoted as saying in the press release.
Lerner, who also owns the Cleveland Browns NFL team in the U.S., purchased the Birmingham, U.K.-based Aston Villa soccer team for 63 million pounds in August 2006.
