A Jewish portrait in the national
The red chalk portrait of the poet Humbert Wolfe
This 1931 red chalk portrait of the poet Humbert Wolfe by his friend, the artist Sir William Rothenstein, has been presented to the National Portrait Gallery by Wolfe’s daughter Anne, now in her 90s. The picture, one of a number held by the gallery, is a testament to the two men’s friendship, Wolfe from a German-Jewish background, Rothenstein born to a Bradford Jewish family. Wolfe is enduringly known for his timeless epigram:

“You cannot hope to bribe or twist, thank God! the British journalist. But, seeing what the man will do unbribed, there’s no occasion to.”
