The Portrait of a Soldier memorial is showing at the west suburban College of DuPage this week. Illinois Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn unveiled the memorial. It displays nearly 180 portraits of Illinois soldiers who've died during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Quinn says the memorial helps visitors remember the state's fallen soldiers.
QUINN: This memorial has been all over our state and its a very important time for all of us to take a moment from our busy lives and thank God we have such heroic young men and women who have given their lives for our country.
The memorial started when Mattoon, Illinois artist Cameron Schilling drew a portrait of his neighbor who died in the war. The neighbor's family then suggested he do portraits of other fallen soldiers.
